Miscanthus, commonly known as Elephant Grass, is a crop which offers a good return on investment, low maintenance and low-cost growing. • Where can Miscanthus be grown?

Miscanthus can be grown anywhere in the UK. In fact, it thrives anywhere in the UK. Our maritime climate provides excellent growing conditions which allow the crop to be harvested in the otherwise quiet winter months. Miscanthus has proven to be easier to manage and offers better returns than with other crops such as Willow.

  • What soil type do I need?

Miscanthus has no real required soil type. Heavier soils are more moisture retentive, while lighter soils are warmer, offering a longer growing season. It is really important to prepare the land well before planting to achieve a clean fine tilth, clear of weeds, which will otherwise compete with the young rhizome for available moisture during the first year. Surprisingly, soil moisture is not an issue at harvesting. The crop and leaf mulch will absorb moisture and dry previously wet land, and the harvesting machinery will travel over the mulch without causing significant wheelings or damage.

  • What is the average yield?

Miscanthus grows in such a way that we expect the number of stems per rhizome to at least double, if not triple, year on year until saturation point at around 6 years. For the first harvest after the second year, you're probably looking between 5 and 6 tonnes per hectare, increasing to 16 - 18 tonnes per ha by year 6. Good plant spacing and site choice are both major factors in determining potential yield. At Miscanthus Growers we have the knowledge and experience to advise on all aspects of establishment, and resolving any post-planting issues. We can help you increase your yield to get the maximum possible return from your land.
